Missionaries to Brazil since 1985 |
Why are we missionaries? To spread the Gospel“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19-20a Our distinct callings?
Phil, Personal goal:" To lead as many people directly or indirectly in my lifetime."
GlobalGrace missionaries Phil and Rita Warkentien have a multi-pronged ministry based in Caruaru. Phil, a second-generation missionary to Brazil, is the pastor of Pinheirópolis Baptist Church, a missions-oriented fellowship of believers which regularly makes trips to other cities, leading many to Christ. But he also oversees the Light of Life ministry, which provides discipleship courses to prison inmates and native Brazilians in remote areas. Being fluent in English and Portuguese, Phil has also served as a translator in many high level situations, including the UN and the BGEA. Phil and Rita also serve with Samaritan’s Purse, giving out shoebox gifts to needy kids at Christmas time. Rita, a Brazilian by birth and usually smiling, has a gift for hospitality. She and Phil often invite guests to their homes to share the Gospel with them. The Warkentiens often welcome and host short-term teams from the USA who come down to Brazil to minister. Beware though, if you come, Phil will put you to work somehow. It might be working on a building project, or it might be speaking or giving your testimony in the church or in a storefront Bible study in downtown Caruaru. Philip Warkentien’s bio Phil’s a second-generation Missionary born July 17th, 1963 in Brazil, to American missionaries that went to Brazil in 1961. At the age of 7, Phil received Christ Jesus as his personal savior and became passionate in leading people to the Lord since the age of 12 when he prayed to lead a friend to Christ. This year Phil will complete 30 years of missionary service in Brazil. Philip is married to Mariarita and has three children (Manoelita 33, Philip II 32, and Marina 30) Philip is the senior pastor of the Igreja Batista Pinheirópolis that he founded 25 years ago and Rita directs a School of Bible Correspondence Courses with 18,000 students spread out in over 2,000 cities in all of Brazil territory. Presently these courses are reaching inmates with the Gospel into 130 penitentiaries, thousands come to a saving knowledge of the Savior each year. Phil leads his people to plant Churches in rural cities with little to no Christian presence. He found this to be the best way of recruiting, training and leading new believers to be passionate about evangelism and discipleship. The last two places their Church started are: "Rancho Comunitario Cristao = Community Christian Ranch" located 16 Kilometers on the outskirts of the city of Caruaru. And for the past 11 years, the Church has gone to “Boa Esperanca = Good Hope” little town in the high arid region of the State of Paraiba. (About 1,000-kilometer round trip). The unique things about these two Church plants are that they started from a Shoebox distribution. In 2001 Phil participated directly with the preparation and interpretation of the Franklin Graham Evangelist Crusade in the city of Recife, NE Brazil. The festival happened right after the 9/11 attacks. During the preparation of the Festival Phil was introduced to Operation Christmas Child, coming to help as a volunteer and then as an IFR (International Field Representative) for the past 16 years. All Phil says it’s a true joy to serve the Lord with an organization key in Leading and disciplining Children for the Lord and helping Churches with the skills and credibility they need to be effective in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ in all regions of the World, especially to those that otherwise would not be reached with includes the outcast and most deprived people and areas of society. Praise the Lord for Samaritan’s Purse and the privilege of serving as a team for God’s Glory. ResponderEncaminhar What we do?
